Why go

Hamburg City Hall is the Rathaus on the Rathausmarkt, the building where the Hamburg Senate, the city-state's government, meets and where the Bürgerschaft sits. The city portal's history page says the old town hall was blown up during the Great Fire of 1842, that the foundation stone of the present building was laid on 6 May 1886 and that it was inaugurated on 26 October 1897, after an association of master builders founded by the architect Martin Haller had planned it. The portal's tour page stresses that the Rathaus is not a museum: guided tours take place only when the Senate and the Bürgerschaft do not need the rooms and can be cancelled at short notice. It says tickets are sold only at the information desk in the foyer, with no advance sale or reservation, and that the central hall, the Rathausdiele, can usually be seen without a tour during opening hours.
