Why go

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is an art museum founded by citizens of Hamburg, in three buildings between the Inner and Outer Alster lakes next to the main railway station. Its about page says the first building opened in August 1869, the second was built between 1912 and 1919, and the Gallery of Contemporary Art, designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers, opened in February 1997. The collection runs from the altarpieces of Master Bertram and Master Francke through 19th-century German Romanticism, with works by Caspar David Friedrich, to modern and contemporary art. The museum's FAQ says time-slot tickets may be required for certain exhibitions and recommends booking those in advance through its online ticket shop. This record is the museum as a whole, including the Gallery of Contemporary Art.
