Why go

This record is the cathedral church, today used by a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran church district of Lübeck-Lauenburg. The cathedral's history page (in German) says a wooden church was built on the site in 1163, that Henry the Lion and Bishop Henry I laid the foundation stone of a large stone cathedral in 1173, that the Romanesque cathedral was completed and consecrated in 1247 and a Gothic choir added between 1266 and 1341, and that Bishop Albert II Krummediek donated a great triumphal cross by Bernt Notke in 1477. It says the bombing of the old town on Palm Sunday, 29 March 1942, struck the cathedral and burned much of its furnishings, that all 17 Gothic vaults had collapsed by 1950, that rebuilding began in 1949 and that the interior was inaugurated in its present form in 1970. The cathedral's visitors' page (in German) says the cathedral cannot be visited during services, other church ceremonies and concerts.
