European Hansemuseum

Europäisches Hansemuseum

The European Hansemuseum (Europäisches Hansemuseum) is a museum of the history of the Hanseatic League at the foot of the Castle Hill on Lübeck's old town island, opened in 2015 and joined to the medieval Castle Friary (Burgkloster).

Why go

This record is the museum, which joins a new main building to the restored Castle Friary (Burgkloster), the former Dominican friary of St. Mary Magdalene. The museum's pages date it from 27 May 2015, say its main exhibition can be followed in English, Russian, Swedish or German, and say the Research Centre for Hanse and Baltic History has been based there since the opening in 2015. Its friary page says the friary was founded around 1229, was the seat of the Dominicans in Lübeck until 1531, later served as a poorhouse and hospital and, from the late 19th century, as a court and prison; two cells and a jury courtroom survive from that time, and the museum asks visitors to remember the victims of National Socialism who were imprisoned and sentenced there. Its visit page says tickets are sold online and at the entrance, advises buying a ticket for a chosen day and time slot online in advance because visitor numbers are limited, and says the permanent-exhibition ticket includes the Castle Friary.
