St. Mary's Church (Lübeck)
St. Marien zu Lübeck · Marienkirche
St. Mary's Church (St. Marien) is the Gothic brick church at the market in the centre of Lübeck's old town, whose two towers rise 125 metres.
Why go
This record is the church, a basilica that its parish says was built as an expression of deep faith and is still used for services and music. The parish's pages say its two towers are 125 metres high and that the building embodies medieval religiosity, the pride of the rising burghers and Lübeck's role in the Hanseatic League, with marks of the Reformation, the Baroque and of war and destruction; Lübeck's tourism site says the bells of St. Marien that fell in the air raid of Palm Sunday night 1942 still recall that night. When XTOUR read it on 11 October 2026, the parish's visit page said that from 2 November 2026 St Marien would be closed at least until May 2027 for renovation, with an information centre in the main entrance area, while the Briefkapelle (for services and pastoral care) and the towers and vaults (by guided tour) stay accessible; outside that closure the parish charges visitors a conservation fee, the MarienTaler, which is not charged for personal prayer, lighting candles or attending devotions and services.
