The domed church on Gyumri's Vardanants Square, built between 1858 and 1873 under architect Tadevos Andikyan on the model of Ani Cathedral and reconsecrated in December 2024.

Why go

Anyone who knew this church as an earthquake-damaged shell will find it changed. The 1988 earthquake left it badly damaged, renovation began in 2002, and Catholicos Karekin II reconsecrated it in December 2024, so descriptions of it as a ruin are out of date. In the Soviet period it served as a museum and concert hall; its belfry was demolished in 1932 and rebuilt in 1964. It shares Vardanants Square with the Seven Wounds Church, and the two make a natural pair on a walk through central Gyumri.

Gyumri

Gyumri is Armenia's second city and its most architecturally distinctive, built from black and red volcanic tuff in a nineteenth-century merchant style that survives across more than a thousand buildings in the protected Kumayri district. It has a strong independent cultural identity, a reputation for humour and craft that Armenians take seriously, and a train link from Yerevan that makes it one of the easiest places in the country to reach without a car.
