Sameba is a modern building in a traditional idiom, and scale is the first impression: more than 5,000 square metres, with a golden cross visible across the city centre. Conceived by Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II and paid for by public donations, it marks the 2,000th year since the birth of Christ and 1,500 years of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The structure extends below as well as above ground and contains nine churches, finished in Georgian limestone with marble and granite from abroad. Come for the size and atmosphere of a working cathedral rather than for medieval art; Metekhi Church stands on the same bank of the river.
