Komodo National Park

Taman Nasional Komodo

Komodo National Park is a protected area of islands and sea between Sumbawa and Flores in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, established in 1980; it includes Komodo, Rinca and Padar islands.

Why go

Komodo National Park was established in 1980, first to protect the Komodo dragon and its habitat and later its land and marine biodiversity as a whole, according to komodonationalpark.org, an older co-management website on which the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) and PT Putri Naga Komodo say they work together to protect the park. That site and the government portal Indonesia Baik both say the park takes in three main islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and many smaller ones. Wikidata records it as a World Heritage Site; no inscription year is given here because the two Indonesian pages and OpenStreetMap give different years and UNESCO's own page could not be read. The park authority's own site did not answer, so entry permits and landing rules are not stated here. This record is the protected area, not Komodo Island, not the Komodo district and not the biosphere reserve; Labuan Bajo is the base it is reached from, not its container.
