Kraton Yogyakarta
Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat · Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat
The Kraton of Yogyakarta is the palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta in Kecamatan Kraton, Kota Yogyakarta; part of it is open to visitors while it remains the Sultan's residence.
Why go
The Kraton is the palace complex of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, laid out as a series of courtyards (plataran) joined by gates between the North and South Alun-Alun, as the palace's own site describes it. The palace's home page says that, besides being the Sultan's residence, part of the Kraton can be visited as a tourist destination managed by the Kawedanan Radya Kartiyasa; its visitor site describes the Kedhaton as the official residence of the Sultan and the royal family to this day. The visitor FAQ says tickets are sold at the counter at the entrance of each visitor unit and online through the official site, that guided tours are offered, and that visitors are expected to wear modest clothing, may not wear kebaya or beskap, and should pay attention to the batik motifs they wear. This record is the palace, not the Sultanate and not the World Heritage property 'The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and its Historic Landmarks', of which Wikidata lists it as a part. Visiting days and hours are set by the palace and change, so check its visitor site before you go.
