Taman Sari

Tamansari · Taman Sari Yogyakarta

Taman Sari is the former royal garden and bathing complex of the Yogyakarta Kraton, in Patehan, Kecamatan Kraton, Yogyakarta; the palace runs it as one of its visitor units.

Why go

Taman Sari began as a garden of the Kraton: the palace's history page says it was built in stages under Sultan Hamengku Buwono I from 1758, with its main parts completed in 1765, and that it once covered more than 10 hectares with pools, canals, artificial lakes and islands, a mosque and underground passages. The same page says the complex was badly damaged in the 1867 earthquake and fell into neglect, with residents building houses among the old gardens and ruins, and that serious restoration began in 1977 and resumed after the 2006 earthquake. The palace's visitor site lists the Tamansari unit, including the Gapura Panggung and Gapura Agung gates and the Umbul Binangun pools, and gives its location as Patehan, Kecamatan Kraton, Kota Yogyakarta. The palace's visitor FAQ says tickets are sold at the counter of each unit and online through its official site. This record is the garden complex, not the Taman Sari district of West Jakarta and not the World Heritage property of which Wikidata lists it as a part.
