Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is the museum of art and antiquities on Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna, whose holdings span five millennia from Ancient Egypt to the late 18th century.

Why go

The Kunsthistorisches Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz is run by the KHM-Museumsverband, a scientific institution under public law (Wissenschaftliche Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts), which also runs the Imperial Treasury, the Imperial Carriage Museum, Ambras Castle in Innsbruck, the Weltmuseum Wien and the Theatermuseum. The museum's home page says its holdings span five millennia, from Ancient Egypt to the late 18th century, and its floor plan lists the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities, the Kunstkammer and the Picture Gallery, whose Dutch, Flemish and German section includes paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Its FAQ says tickets are valid for a chosen date and time slot, bought online or at the cash desk subject to availability, with no time limit once inside. The Natural History Museum's architecture page notes that the two museums, designed by Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer, face each other with identical exteriors. This record is the museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz, not the KHM-Museumsverband.
