Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, protected as a nature reserve.
Why go
Visit Azores says the crater lake has been a nature reserve since 1974 and reaches a maximum depth of 30 metres, and gives the São Miguel Natural Park as its contact. The Azores trails site says the PRC2SMI Praia to Lagoa do Fogo walk, which starts beside the Parque Escutista dos Lagos, is the only certified walking trail that gives access to the lake, and asks walkers to stay on the marked trail, respect the plants and wildlife and carry their litter away, and to take care and respect the birdlife at the lake, particularly in the gulls' nesting season in April and May. This record is the lake, not the nature reserve designated over it and not the trail; its map point is in the water, not at a viewpoint or a road.
