Medici Chapels
Cappelle Medicee · Museo delle Cappelle Medicee
The Medici Chapels are the funerary chapels of the Medici family at the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, run as a state museum that includes Michelangelo's New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes.
Why go
This record is the museum of the chapels, not the Basilica of San Lorenzo they adjoin. The Musei del Bargello page says the museum is made up of the New Sacristy, designed and sculpted by Michelangelo between 1519 and 1534, the Chapel of the Princes, a grand-ducal mausoleum, and the crypts below, and that the chapels were declared a national monument and made a state museum in 1869. The same page says booking is optional, that the room known as Michelangelo's 'secret room' can be entered only with a booking and in small numbers, and that large backpacks and bags may not be taken in. It also lists museum-led thematic tours in Italian included in the ticket.
