Mount Merapi
Gunung Merapi
Merapi is an active stratovolcano on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, north of the city of Yogyakarta.
Why go
Merapi is an active volcano that MAGMA Indonesia, the geohazard portal built by Indonesia's Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), lists under both the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. MAGMA publishes the current activity level of each volcano it monitors, with recommendations, so check Merapi's status there before planning anything on the mountain; on 11 October 2026 it listed Merapi at Level III (Siaga). This record is the volcano itself, not the Gunung Merapi National Park, not the Merapi Volcano Museum and not any jeep-tour area. Whether the summit can be climbed is not stated here. Its pin is the summit, standing for the whole mountain, and is not a trailhead.
