Phimai Historical Park

อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พิมาย

Phimai Historical Park is the Fine Arts Department's park over the ancient town of Phimai and its sanctuary, Prasat Hin Phimai, in Nai Mueang subdistrict, Phimai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

Why go

The Fine Arts Department says the park's area of responsibility, about 2,658 rai, covers the main part of ancient Phimai, bounded by the Mun River to the north and east and the Lam Chakkarat to the west, and reaching the southern baray. It describes Prasat Hin Phimai as a Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary about 1,000 years old, in a rectangular town of 565 by 1,030 metres enclosed by a wall and moat. The Department says it restored the main sanctuary by anastylosis with the French government between 1964 and 1969 and that the park was officially opened on 12 April 1989. This record is the park as a whole, with the sanctuary at its core.
