Roman Theatre of Málaga

Teatro Romano de Málaga

The Roman Theatre of Málaga is the excavated 1st-century theatre on Calle Alcazabilla below the Alcazaba, open as an archaeological enclave of the Junta de Andalucía.

Why go

The Roman Theatre of Málaga is the excavated theatre on Calle Alcazabilla, on the hillside below the Alcazaba, run as an archaeological enclave by the Junta de Andalucía. The Junta's enclave page says it was built in the early 1st century AD and used for about two centuries, then lay hidden under streets and houses until 1951, when garden works in front of the Casa de la Cultura uncovered it; that building was later demolished and the whole site excavated. The page says the enclave has an interpretation centre, that no booking is needed for an unguided visit while booking is recommended for guided visits, and that entry is limited by capacity. It also says the enclave may close to the public during orange or red heat alerts. The Alcazaba above it is a separate record run by the Ayuntamiento de Málaga.
