Why go

The Roman Theatre of Mérida is the theatre of the Roman city of Emerita Augusta, in Mérida, Extremadura; this record is the theatre, not the wider Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, of which it is one monument. The Consorcio Ciudad Monumental de Mérida, whose site presents the ensemble's monuments and sells its tickets, says the theatre was inaugurated in 16 to 15 BC with the consul Marcus Agrippa as its promoter, that it lay buried for centuries with only the top of its seating visible, and that it shares one enclosure with the Roman amphitheatre on Plaza Margarita Xirgu. The consortium's visits page says tickets for all its enclosures can be bought online to avoid queuing at the ticket office. Spain's national tourism board says the theatre still hosts the International Classical Theatre Festival on summer evenings.
