Runkelstein Castle

Schloss Runkelstein · Castel Roncolo

Runkelstein Castle (Castel Roncolo) is a medieval castle on a rocky outcrop above Bolzano in South Tyrol, known for its secular frescoes of courtly life.

Why go

Runkelstein Castle, Castel Roncolo in Italian, stands on a rocky outcrop above Bolzano at the entrance to the Sarntal valley. The castle's site says it was built from 1237 by the Wangen family, bought in 1385 by the merchant brothers Niklaus and Franz Vintler, who extended it and had it decorated with frescoes of courtly life, and given to the city of Bolzano by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1893; it reopened to visitors in 2000 after restoration. The frescoes are in the West Palace and the Summer Palace, whose cycles include the tale of Tristan and Isolde. The castle is run by the Foundation Castles Bolzano, and its site says guided tours can be booked for groups and that scheduled weekend tours are held in Italian and German. Although the city of Bolzano owns it and its address is in Bolzano, the castle lies in the comune of Ritten (Renon) according to Wikidata and OpenStreetMap.
