Salzburg Residenz
Residenz zu Salzburg · Salzburger Residenz
The Salzburg Residenz is the former palace of Salzburg's prince-archbishops on Residenzplatz, whose state rooms are shown as part of the DomQuartier museum tour.
Why go
This record is the palace on Residenzplatz, not the DomQuartier circuit as a whole and not the Neue Residenz across the square, which houses the Salzburg Museum. The DomQuartier's pages say Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the medieval bishop's seat demolished for a new building in the Italian style, that the Residenz served the prince-archbishops as official residence and place of representation, and that its 15 state rooms span the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. They name the Carabinieri Hall and the Audience Hall among the rooms and say the conference room is where Mozart gave his first concert. According to the DomQuartier, the state rooms are seen on its tour, with one ticket for all exhibition areas; its pages list the Residenzgalerie, on the palace's third floor, as currently closed.
