Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburger Dom

Salzburg Cathedral is the Catholic cathedral on Domplatz in Salzburg's old town, an early Baroque building consecrated in 1628 and reconsecrated in 1959 after war damage.

Why go

This record is the cathedral church on Domplatz, not the square and not the DomQuartier museum circuit, which passes through its galleries. Salzburg's tourism board says the first cathedral was consecrated in 774, that after a fire in 1598 the present early Baroque building by the architect Santino Solari was consecrated by Archbishop Paris Lodron in 1628, and that after a bomb damaged the dome in 1944 it was consecrated again in 1959. The board says the bronze font in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised is among its furnishings, and that the crypt holds remains of the earlier cathedrals. It also says an admission fee is charged as a contribution to the building's upkeep, that visiting is not possible during services and the midday organ music, and that the cathedral cannot be visited during the 'Everyman' performances on Domplatz in summer.
