Hohensalzburg Fortress

Festung Hohensalzburg

Hohensalzburg Fortress is the castle complex on the Festungsberg above Salzburg's old town, whose first fortifications its operator dates to 1077.

Why go

This record is the fortress, run by Salzburger Burgen & Schlösser; the FestungsBahn funicular that climbs to it is not a separate record. The operator's history page says the first fortifications were built in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard, that the fortress took its present appearance around 1500 under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, and that it was never taken by military means; the prince-archbishops mostly lived in the Residenz in the old town. The operator's visit pages name the Princes' Rooms, the Magic Theatre, the armoury and several museums inside, and its ticket page lists tickets with the funicular or for the footpath. Its questions-and-answers page says tickets can be bought online or on site at the FestungsBahn valley station or at the ticket office on the footpath, that groups and school classes need an advance reservation unless they pay on site, that photography indoors is allowed without flash for private purposes only, and that drones are not permitted.
