Why go
The Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules) is a lighthouse of Roman origin in A Coruña, Galicia, which still works as a maritime signal. A Coruña City Council's site for the tower says it was probably built in the second half of the 1st century to guide ships and mainly to mark the entrance to the great Artabrian port, and that it now stands inside a 50-hectare urban park protected as a Natural Area of Local Interest. The council says the tower was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 27 June 2009. Its visitor centre (CIAV), at the foot of the ramp leading up to the tower, sells tickets to visit the lighthouse, and the council's site has an online booking page. The tower's own site says the tower is closed from 1 October to 15 November 2026 for works on its electrical installation, and that visitors can ask at the CIAV. Opening times are set by the council, so check the tower's site before you go.
