A month-by-month guide to weather, crowds and seasonal conditions in Gudauri, and how to choose when to go.
Weather & seasons
Gudauri has a high alpine climate. Winter brings persistent snow, strong winds, rapid visibility changes and temperatures far below those in Tbilisi. Summer days can be sunny and mild while nights remain cool. Weather at 3,000 metres can be dramatically harsher than conditions around the hotels.
Best time
December through April is the broad ski-season planning window, but exact lift and piste opening and closing dates vary by snow, wind and operations. January and February usually offer the strongest winter atmosphere, while March can combine substantial snow coverage with longer daylight. Historical seasons are context rather than a forecast, so check current Mountain Trails Agency status for the dates you will travel. June to September suits paragliding, mountain scenery, hiking and cycling, but Gudauri is much quieter outside ski season and many seasonal businesses may close.

2025/26
Gudauri and Kobi
MTA announced Pirveli, Soliko, Gudaura, Kobi, Firni and Truso lifts from 27 December, while ski trails would open progressively according to snow coverage. The closing notice kept Gudauri operating through 19 April.
2024/25
Gudauri and Kobi
MTA described 21 December as the Gudauri ski-season opening and later stated that the season ran from 21 December to the official closing day on 17 April.
2023/24
The historical Instagram season summary says lifts started operating on 15 December and the season ended on 21 April. Gudauri.com independently corroborates the 15 December lift start, while MTA separately announced the ceremonial opening for 20 December. These are intentionally stored as different events rather than forcing one 'opening date'.
2022/23
The historical Instagram season summary says lifts began operating on 27 December for sightseeing, but skiing became possible on 13 January after an unusually snow-poor December, mainly using artificial snow. This remains secondary evidence, and the distinction is material: it must not be collapsed into a single opening date.
2020/21
Ski-lift operation was legally suspended during Georgia's COVID restrictions and the restriction was removed with effect from 8 March 2021. The historical Instagram season summary records skiing from 8 March through 26 April; the legislation corroborates the restriction change, not the exact closing date.
