How much does Sighnaghi cost?

Georgia uses the Georgian lari (GEL). Cards are accepted at most hotels, established restaurants and larger wineries, but cash is still needed at family producers, guesthouses, market stalls and with drivers, and Sighnaghi has far fewer places to withdraw it than Telavi or Tbilisi. Treat cash as something to arrange before you arrive rather than on the day. The town's own costs are moderate, but they are shaped by a very concentrated demand curve: most visitors arrive from Tbilisi in the late morning and leave in the afternoon, and the restaurants along the busiest tourist streets are priced for that midday peak. Walking a few minutes off the main circuit, or eating in the evening once the day groups have gone, usually improves both price and service. For a short visit the largest single line is not the town at all. It is the return journey and any winery transport, which can easily exceed everything you spend inside Sighnaghi.

Typical mealRestaurant meals are reasonable by European standards, and the usual way to overspend is not choosing an expensive place but over-ordering. Georgian menus are built around sharing rather than a plate each, and khinkali and khachapuri in particular arrive far larger than they read on a menu. Two people ordering a starter and a main each will normally pay more, and eat less well, than the same two ordering three dishes between them.

TaxiYou do not need a taxi inside Sighnaghi, because the historic center is walkable. Everything outside it costs money: Bodbe, the wineries, the villages and the Tbilisi road. Arranging that transport in advance is usually better value than negotiating it in the square at the point when you already need it, which is the moment with the least bargaining power.

Public transportMarshrutkas link Sighnaghi with Tbilisi and Telavi cheaply, but they run a few fixed times a day rather than frequently, and the last departure is earlier than most visitors assume. Check the final departure when you arrive rather than when you want to leave, since missing it turns an inexpensive day trip into a private taxi fare or an unplanned night.

Museum ticketSighnaghi Museum charges admission. The fortress walls, the lanes and the valley viewpoints, which are the main reason most people come, cost nothing. Tastings rather than tickets are what make a day here expensive. Confirm current admission and opening days directly with the museum.
