Money & costs

How much does Tbilisi cost?

Georgia's official currency is the Georgian lari (GEL), and everyday transactions are conducted in GEL. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at businesses with POS terminals in Tbilisi, and contactless payment is common. Travelers should still carry some cash for markets, small businesses or situations where card payment is unavailable. Currency exchange offices are widespread; compare the buy/sell rate and any commission before exchanging larger amounts. When a foreign card or ATM offers to convert a transaction into your home currency, check the rate carefully and generally choose to keep the transaction in GEL if you want your own card provider to handle the conversion.
