Old Tbilisi

The historic core around Abanotubani, Meidani, the sulfur baths, Narikala, Metekhi and the streets surrounding the old city. This is the most atmospheric part of Tbilisi for many first-time visitors and places a large concentration of major sights within walking distance.

Best for

Excellent for travelers who want to step directly into the historic city. The trade-off is that some streets are steep, cobbled or busy with visitors, and nightlife noise can affect certain properties. Check the exact street rather than choosing a hotel solely because it says 'Old Tbilisi.'

Sololaki

A historic residential district immediately southwest of Freedom Square, known for 19th- and early-20th-century architecture, decorative entrances, balconies and atmospheric streets. It feels central without being identical to the busiest parts of the old town.

Best for

One of the strongest all-round bases for travelers who want historic character and central access. Some streets climb steeply toward Mtatsminda, so travelers with mobility concerns should check the exact elevation of their accommodation.

Vera

A central neighborhood north of Rustaveli Avenue with restaurants, cafés, bars, boutique hotels and a more contemporary local atmosphere than the old town. It is well positioned between central sightseeing areas and the more residential parts of the city.

Best for

A very good choice for travelers who care about eating and drinking well and prefer a neighborhood that feels lived-in rather than entirely tourist-oriented. Some parts sit uphill, so location within Vera matters.

Vake

A greener, more residential and relatively upscale district west of the historic center. Vake is associated with cafés, restaurants, parks, international residents and a quieter urban atmosphere.

Best for

A strong option for travelers who value comfort, restaurants and a more residential environment over being within walking distance of every historic attraction. Allow additional travel time to Old Tbilisi and other central sights.

Avlabari

One of Tbilisi’s historic districts on the left bank of the Mtkvari, close to Metekhi Church, Rike Park, Sameba Cathedral and the old city. It combines traditional residential streets with convenient access to many major attractions.

Best for

Often a practical alternative to staying directly inside Old Tbilisi. Some streets are steep and accommodation quality varies, so check recent property reviews and the exact walking route before booking.

Marjanishvili & Agmashenebeli

A lively left-bank area centered around Marjanishvili Square and Davit Agmashenebeli Avenue. Restored historic architecture, restaurants, cafés, theaters and metro access make it one of the city’s more convenient mixed-use neighborhoods.

Best for

Useful for travelers who want good metro access and plenty of restaurants without staying in the most tourist-heavy part of Old Tbilisi. The atmosphere can vary significantly from one street to another.

Rustaveli Avenue & Freedom Square

The central civic and cultural axis of Tbilisi, with museums, theaters, government buildings, shops, hotels and quick access to both Old Tbilisi and districts such as Vera and Sololaki.

Best for

Extremely convenient for travelers who prioritize a central address and easy transport. Properties directly on major roads can experience traffic and city noise, so light sleepers may prefer a side street.

Mtatsminda

The hillside district rising above central Tbilisi toward Mtatsminda Park and the television tower. It offers atmospheric streets, views and proximity to Rustaveli and Sololaki while feeling more residential in many sections.

Best for

Beautiful for travelers who do not mind hills. Some accommodation can involve substantial uphill walking, so check access carefully if traveling with luggage, a stroller or limited mobility.
