Alcázar of Toledo

Alcázar de Toledo

The Alcázar of Toledo is a fortress on one of the hills of Toledo, now the seat of Spain's Army Museum (Museo del Ejército).

Why go

The Army Museum's site says the Alcázar of Toledo is the museum's seat and that the museum occupies two buildings, the Alcázar and a new building that gives access to all the facilities, which together form a single complex from outside. Its Alcázar route marks surviving spaces inside the fortress, among them a horseshoe arch from the Umayyad-period entrance, Roman and Islamic cisterns, fifteenth-century water tanks and a Renaissance staircase by Francisco de Villalpando that was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War. Wikidata also lists the Biblioteca de Castilla-La Mancha among the building's occupants. This record is the fortress building; the Army Museum that has its seat there is a related subject, not this record.
