Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes
San Juan de los Reyes is a Franciscan monastery in Toledo founded by Isabella of Castile in the late fifteenth century, with a church and lower and upper cloisters, on Calle de los Reyes Católicos.
Why go
The monastery's site says Isabella of Castile had it built as a votive church and memorial of the victory at Toro on 1 March 1476, that work began around 1477 under the architect Juan Guas, and that the monastery was finished around 1525 to 1526. Damaged in the Peninsular War and by the confiscations of 1836, it was restored from 1883, handed to the Franciscan Order in 1954, and its church reopened for worship in 1967; it has been a parish of the Archdiocese of Toledo since 1977. The site's visitor information, last updated in July 2023, says visitors enter from Calle de los Reyes Católicos rather than through the church portal, that the ticket covers the lower and upper cloisters, the old sacristy and the church, and that booking is not needed.
