Toledo Cathedral

Catedral de Toledo · Catedral de Santa María

Toledo Cathedral, the Primate Cathedral of Spain, is the Gothic cathedral of Saint Mary in Toledo, begun in 1226 on the site of the Visigothic basilica of Santa María and the city's main mosque.

Why go

The cathedral's history page says construction began in 1226 under Ferdinand III and Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, on the site of the Visigothic basilica of Santa María and later the city's main mosque, and that the cathedral was consecrated in 1493. The cathedral's site describes it as a living church where the liturgy is celebrated every day. The cathedral's ticket page says the cultural visit covers spaces including the Capilla Mayor, the Transparente, the choir, the sacristy and the cloister, that tickets are sold online or at the cathedral shop opposite the Puerta Llana, and that visitors enter by the Puerta Llana on Calle Cardenal Cisneros. The same page says photography and filming are not allowed inside and that visitors must be decently dressed.
