Ancient Thera

Αρχαία Θήρα

Ancient Thera is the archaeological site of the ancient city of Thera on the top of Mesa Vouno, the hill on the southeastern cape of Santorini, founded in the 8th century BC.

Why go

Ancient Thera is the site of the ancient city of Thera on Mesa Vouno, the hill that forms the southeastern cape of Santorini; it is not the Bronze Age town at Akrotiri. The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades says the city was founded in the 8th century BC, was inhabited at least until the 9th century AD, and is preserved with sanctuaries, temples, public buildings, a theatre, a market and a road network that were in place by Hellenistic and Roman times. Hellenic Heritage, the Ministry of Culture's visitor site, lists the site under Kamari and says finds from the city and its cemeteries are in the Archaeological Museum of Thera. Hellenic Heritage announced on 26 June 2026 that the site would be closed from 27 June 2026 until further notice, and when XTOUR checked on 11 October 2026 its official ticket store listed no Ancient Thera ticket; check Hellenic Heritage's announcements before planning a visit.
