Benaki Museum
Μουσείο Μπενάκη
The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture is the Benaki Museum's main building at 1 Koumbari Street in Kolonaki, Athens, presenting Greek history and culture from the prehistoric era to the 20th century.
Why go
This is Athens, the city's official guide, describes the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture as a panorama of Greek history and culture from the prehistoric era to the 20th century, in a building that dates back to 1860 and was extended in later decades, most recently in 1989-2000. The guide says the house was the Harokopos family residence, bought and renovated by Emmanuel Benakis in 1910, and turned into a museum by his son Antonis Benakis after Emmanuel's death in 1929; it points to two 18th- and 19th-century reception rooms from northern Greece. This record is the main building in Kolonaki; the Benaki Museum's other sites, such as the Museum of Islamic Art and the building at 138 Pireos Street, are separate places. Opening hours, tickets and booking are set by the museum; check its own site before you go.
