Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens

Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο

The Byzantine and Christian Museum is one of Greece's national museums, housed in the Villa Ilissia at 22 Vasilissis Sofias Avenue in Athens, with collections from the 3rd to the 20th century.

Why go

The Byzantine and Christian Museum describes itself as one of Greece's national museums, holding more than 25,000 artefacts dating from the 3rd to the 20th century AD and centred on religious artefacts of the Early Christian, Byzantine, medieval and post-Byzantine periods. Hellenic Heritage says it was founded in 1914, that its collection was first kept in the National Archaeological Museum, and that it moved in 1930 to the Villa Ilissia, built in 1840-1848 as the winter residence of the Duchess of Plaisance. The museum's tickets page says a separate ticket may apply to temporary exhibitions and advises groups to arrange their visit in advance. The same page also lists the Loverdos Museum at its own address on Mavromichali Street; that is a different building and not this record.
