Berlin Wall Memorial

Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the Berlin Wall Foundation's memorial site on both sides of Bernauer Strasse in Berlin, with an outdoor exhibition on the former border strip, the Chapel of Reconciliation, the Window of Remembrance, a Visitor Center and a Documentation Center.

Why go

The Berlin Wall Foundation says the memorial runs along both sides of Bernauer Strasse: on the former border strip, once the East Berlin side, the outdoor exhibition includes the official monument to the memory of the divided city and the victims of communist tyranny, the Window of Remembrance with the names and photographs of victims of the Wall, and the Chapel of Reconciliation, while the Visitor Center and the Documentation Center with its observation tower stand on the former West Berlin side. The foundation says the monument was inaugurated on 13 August 1998 and the Documentation Center opened on 9 November 1999, and that under a concept for commemorating the Wall adopted by the Berlin Senate in 2006 the memorial on Bernauer Strasse was declared the central site of remembrance for the division of Berlin. Its visitor page asks visitors and registered groups to begin at the Visitor Center at Bernauer Strasse 119, says individual visitors do not need to register in advance, and says the outdoor exhibition extends for 1.4 kilometres along the street. Group tours and workshops, the foundation says, must be booked in advance. This record is the memorial site as a whole; its map point stands for the whole site and is not the Visitor Center or a way in.
