Cabo da Roca
Cabo da Roca
Cabo da Roca is a cape on the Atlantic coast in the parish of Colares, Sintra municipality, with a lighthouse whose operation began in 1772.
Why go
Cabo da Roca is the headland on the Atlantic coast in the parish of Colares, Sintra municipality; Parques de Sintra and Visit Lisboa both describe it as the most westerly point of mainland Europe, and Visit Lisboa says the land drops into the sea from 140-metre-high cliffs. Parques de Sintra, which lists the Cabo da Roca Lighthouse among its parks and monuments, says the lighthouse began operating in 1772 and notes the nearby cross with lines from Camões' Lusíadas. This record is the cape; the lighthouse is a structure on it, and Parques de Sintra's page lists ticketed essential and panoramic visits to the lighthouse courtyard and interpretation area. The cape is in Colares parish, outside the town of Sintra, and this record does not place it in the town.
