Park of Pena

Parque da Pena

The Park of Pena is the 85-hectare Romantic park around Pena Palace in the Sintra hills, laid out by Ferdinand II with winding paths, lakes and tree species from every continent.

Why go

The Park of Pena is the wooded park around Pena Palace in the Sintra hills, which Parques de Sintra's history page says Ferdinand II designed with winding paths leading to landmarks such as the High Cross, the Temple of Columns and the Valley of the Lakes, and planted with tree species from every continent across its 85 hectares. Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, a publicly owned company, manages it. This record is the park, not the palace at its summit, which has its own timed tickets. Parques de Sintra sells a separate 'Visit to the Park of Pena', and its page says that visit covers the whole park, including the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and Pena Farm, and gives access to the Palace Terraces, kitchen and chapel. The operator's Pena page names two park entrances, the Main Entrance and the Lakes Entrance, and says access to the monument is not authorized to private vehicles.
