Why go
The Moorish Castle (Castelo dos Mouros) is the fortification on one of the peaks of the Sintra hills above Sintra; Parques de Sintra's page says it was founded in the 10th century during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and that its walls run across the hill, interlinking boulders and cliffs. Parques de Sintra's historic-centre itinerary says the castle has two circles of walls with the former Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim between them, now the castle's interpretation centre, and that Ferdinand II renovated the castle in the 19th century. It is managed by Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, a publicly owned company. This record is the castle in Sintra; the Palace of Pena, which its parapet walk looks out over, is a separate record. Parques de Sintra's page says access to the monument is not authorized to private vehicles.
