Pena Palace

Palácio Nacional da Pena

Pena Palace is the Romantic palace that Portugal's consort king Ferdinand II built in the mid-19th century onto a 16th-century monastery, on a summit of the Sintra hills, surrounded by the Park of Pena.

Why go

Pena Palace (Palácio Nacional da Pena) is the palace that Ferdinand II, Portugal's consort king, created in the mid-19th century by adding an entirely new palace to the former monastery of Our Lady of Pena, which he bought in 1838, according to Parques de Sintra's history page. The palace and the park around it are managed by Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, a publicly owned company. This record is the palace, not the Park of Pena around it, which Parques de Sintra also sells as a separate park visit, and not the Moorish Castle on the neighbouring hill. Parques de Sintra's Pena page says palace tickets are only available for a specific date and time and that entry to the palace is only at the scheduled time; its Essential Visit page says that visit covers the New Palace wing and the entire Park of Pena, including the Chalet of the Countess of Edla. The same Pena page says access to the monument is not authorized to private vehicles.
