Caerphilly Castle
Castell Caerffili
Caerphilly Castle is a 13th-century castle with extensive water defences in the town of Caerphilly, in the care of Cadw.
Why go
Caerphilly Castle is in the care of Cadw. Cadw's page says the Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare began it in 1268 in response to the rise of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, combining walls, towers and gatehouses with water defences that cover a total of 30 acres, and that Civil War gunpowder left the south-east tower leaning. It also says the Great Hall and inner ward have reopened after two years of conservation work, with new digital exhibits. Cadw says admission tickets can be bought on arrival or booked online, and offers a joint ticket with Castell Coch. The castle is in Caerphilly County Borough, not in Cardiff: Cardiff is a travel base for it, not its location.
