Why go

Castell Coch, the 'Red Castle', is in the care of Cadw. Cadw's page says the architect William Burges, given free rein by the third Marquess of Bute, created its highly decorated High Victorian interiors over the remains of a 13th-century castle once used as a hunting lodge by the Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare. Cadw says admission tickets can be bought on arrival or booked online, and offers a joint ticket with Caerphilly Castle. The page also reports a large conservation project under way to stop water damage to the interior decoration. This record is the castle at Tongwynlais, which Cadw's page presents for its Victorian interiors rather than as a fortification.
