Cardiff Castle
Castell Caerdydd
Cardiff Castle is a castle in the centre of Cardiff whose site runs from a Roman fort through a Norman keep to a Victorian Gothic revival residence; it is owned by the city.
Why go
Cardiff Castle says it is owned by the city and open to the public, having been given to the city and its people by the Bute family in 1947. Its history page traces the site from a Roman fort built at the end of the 50s AD, whose stone walls can still be seen, through a Norman motte-and-bailey castle and its keep, to the lavishly decorated Gothic revival residence created in the 19th century by the 3rd Marquess of Bute with the architect William Burges, and to Second World War air-raid shelters in the castle walls. The castle's visit page says guided House Tours of the Victorian apartments are an upgrade to the standard castle ticket and are booked on the day at the castle's ticket office, and that people who live or work in Cardiff can apply for a Castle Key. This record is the castle, not the Castle community of Cardiff in which it stands.
