Charlottenburg Palace

Schloss Charlottenburg

Charlottenburg Palace is the former Hohenzollern summer residence in Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough, made up of the Old Palace and the New Wing and run by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG).

Why go

The SPSG says Charlottenburg Palace, with the Old Palace and the New Wing, was among the favourite retreats of seven generations of Hohenzollern rulers, was severely damaged in the Second World War and was largely rebuilt and refurnished; its interiors trace changing tastes from the Baroque period to the early 20th century and include the Porcelain Cabinet and the Palace Chapel. Its New Wing page says Frederick the Great added the wing after he began his reign in 1740, and that its festival halls include the White Hall and the Golden Gallery. The SPSG's Old Palace page says visits are self-guided or guided, in German and English, and that the charlottenburg+ ticket, valid on one day for all SPSG museum buildings in the palace gardens, books a fixed admission time to the Old Palace. This record is the palace building; the palace gardens, the New Pavilion, the Belvedere and the Mausoleum are separate places.
