Großer Tiergarten

The Großer Tiergarten is a large public park in Berlin's Mitte borough, stretching between the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Zoo and surrounding the Victory Column.

Why go

visitBerlin, the city's official tourism website, says the Tiergarten stretches between the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Zoo, surrounds the Victory Column and covers 210 hectares. It says Elector Frederick III turned the former hunting grounds into a pleasure park for the people at the end of the 17th century, that Peter Joseph Lenné redesigned it as a public park in the English style between 1833 and 1838, and that after heavy damage in the Second World War, and the felling of its remaining trees for fuel in the winter of 1945/46, it was replanted from 1949. Places named on the same page in or beside the park include the Soviet war memorial, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the Federal President; each is a separate place and not part of this record. The park's map point stands for the whole park and is not an entrance.
