Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a Protestant church ensemble on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough: the tower ruin of the old church with its memorial hall, and four buildings by Egon Eiermann from 1959 to 1963.

Why go

The parish describes the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche (in German, translated here) as a place of faith and remembrance, of peace and reconciliation, and a memorial against war. Its history pages say that of the old church only the tower ruin with its memorial hall survives and is accessible, and that the architect Egon Eiermann placed four new buildings around the ruin: the church and the bell tower, built between 1959 and 1961, and the chapel and the foyer building of 1963. The parish's exhibition page, read on 9 October 2026, says the memorial hall, whose mosaics show how the old church looked and which holds an exhibition on the ensemble's history, is closed from 29 August 2026 for renovation work, while guided tours of the church ensemble continue. Services and concerts are held in the church, and the parish says everyone is welcome at its services. This record is the whole ensemble, not the 1961 church building alone.
