Why go

The Church of Saint Spyridon is a single-nave church in the Old Town of Corfu, built around 1589 to 1594 by the Voulgaris family, according to the Holy Metropolis of Corfu, Paxoi and the Diapontian Islands. The Metropolis says the relics of Saint Spyridon, the island's protector, are kept there together with those of Saint Theodora the Empress, and that by tradition the saint's relic was brought to Corfu from Constantinople in 1489. It dates the bell tower to 1590 and credits the iconostasis to Corfiot painters including Prosalentis and Doxaras. The same page gives the saint's feast as 12 December and says his relic is carried in solemn procession five times a year. It is a working church; no visiting rules from the church itself were read, so none are given here.
