Dodona
Δωδώνη
Dodona is the archaeological site of the ancient sanctuary and oracle of Zeus and Dione at the foot of Mount Tomaros in Epirus, with a restored ancient theatre.
Why go
Hellenic Heritage says the oracle was dedicated to Zeus and his wife Dione, that for centuries the sanctuary was open-air with a sacred oak at the centre of worship and divination, and that the first small temple of Zeus was built in the early 4th century BC. It credits King Pyrrhus with a building programme that added temples, a theatre, the Bouleuterion, the Prytaneion and a stadium, and says the restored theatre now hosts performances and the Dodona Festival. The site lies in the Municipality of Dodoni, not in the city of Ioannina, which XTOUR records as a base for it. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store sells timed-entry tickets for Dodona.
