Ioannina Castle
Κάστρο Ιωαννίνων
Ioannina Castle (Kastro) is the walled castle of Ioannina, a quarter of the city with its own neighbourhoods and lanes, whose south-eastern citadel is known as Its Kale.
Why go
The Municipality of Ioannina describes the castle as a settlement with neighbourhoods, cobbled lanes and cafés, including the Its Kale area with the old Fethiye Mosque. Hellenic Heritage says the south-eastern citadel of Ioannina Castle is known as Its Kale and holds an archaeological park with the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina, in a building of 1958, and that the Fethiye Mosque directly opposite the museum is also in the museum's care. This record is the walled castle as a whole; the Byzantine Museum and the Fethiye Mosque are separate subjects with their own visiting arrangements, which are not given here.
