Cave of Perama

Σπήλαιο Περάματος

The Cave of Perama is a show cave in Goritsa hill at Perama, a settlement beside Lake Pamvotida in the Municipality of Ioannina, which runs the cave.

Why go

The cave's website, which carries a greeting from the deputy mayor of Ioannina and the municipality's staffing decisions for the cave, says the cave lies in Goritsa hill in Perama, by Lake Pamvotida, that it became known during the Second World War when villagers sheltered in it, and that the geologist Ioannis Petrocheilos found it in 1951 and explored it from 1953 to 1956. Its visit page says tickets are sold only at the cave's ticket office and that the start of each guided tour is announced over a loudspeaker. The site also describes a visitor centre with geological and palaeontological finds and a tourist train from the Perama entrance to the cave. Perama is a separate settlement and municipal unit of the Municipality of Ioannina, not part of the city, so XTOUR records Ioannina as a base, not a container.
