Clérigos Church and Tower

Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos

The Clérigos Church and Tower is the 18th-century Baroque church and bell tower designed by Nicolau Nasoni for the Brotherhood of the Clérigos, on Rua de São Filipe de Nery in Porto's historic centre.

Why go

The church and tower were commissioned in the 18th century by the Irmandade dos Clérigos (Brotherhood of the Clérigos) and designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni; the brotherhood's site says the tower was completed in July 1763 and the complex was classified a National Monument in June 1910. The site says the complex reopened on 12 December 2014 after restoration with a museum in the brotherhood's former private quarters, and it presents the tower, the Clérigos Museum and the church as one complex. Its planning page says tickets can be bought on site or online in advance, and its ticket-office page sells the daytime visit as a tower and museum pack. The church is in use: the planning page lists weekly Masses, one of them in English. This record is the church and tower together; Wikidata also holds the church and the tower as separate items.
