Soares dos Reis National Museum
Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis
The Soares dos Reis National Museum (Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis) is a national art museum in the Palácio dos Carrancas, at Rua de Dom Manuel II 44 in Porto.
Why go
The museum's history page traces it to the museum of paintings and prints created in 1833 by D. Pedro IV, known as the Museu Portuense; it took the name of Soares dos Reis after the proclamation of the Republic and became a national museum in 1932. The same page says it was then installed in the Palácio dos Carrancas, a neoclassical residence and gold and silver thread factory that the Morais e Castro family had built in 1795, and was remodelled in 2001 to an architectural project by Fernando Távora's studio. Its legal page describes it as a service of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, EPE. The visit page says bags, umbrellas and other large objects may not be taken in and that lockers are provided free. This record is the museum, not the palace building, which Wikidata holds as a separate item.
