Archaeological Site of Delos
Αρχαιολογικός χώρος Δήλου · Δήλος
The archaeological site of Delos covers the small island of Delos in the Cyclades, mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and includes its archaeological museum; Hellenic Heritage says it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Why go
This record is the archaeological site that covers the island of Delos, next to Mykonos, together with the Archaeological Museum of Delos; Delos is a separate island, so Mykonos is its base, not its container. Hellenic Heritage and the Ministry of Culture's Odysseus portal say the island was the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, that about 30,000 people lived on it around 90 BC, and that it has been a World Heritage Site since 1990; the Odysseus page dates the start of excavation to 1872. Hellenic Heritage says one ticket gives access to the site and the museum, and the Odysseus page says the site ticket does not include the ferry fare from Mykonos or any other island. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store sells timed-entry tickets for Delos and says they are valid for a single entry on the date and time chosen and are not refundable.
